Debunking Common Hair Myths

Whether you’ve heard it from a friend, a family member, or saw it online, there’s tons of tips out there about how to take care of your hair — some are great, and some are not! Let’s set the record straight on some of the most common myths about hair and hair care once and for all:

Trimming your hair makes it grow faster

Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends. It’s way more important to ensure your scalp is healthy, setting a strong foundation for healthy hair growth. However, it’s definitely not a bad idea to get trims while growing your hair out! Trims don’t actually speed up your hair growth, but they keep split ends at bay, removing them before they have a chance to creep up your hair, making it look thin and sparse. Regular trims also reduce breakage at the ends of your hair, giving it the appearance of faster growth! If you haven’t gotten a trim in a while, this is your sign to book one now.

Second-day hair is better for styling

This is true! Freshly-washed hair can be difficult to work with, and often won’t hold as well in pins and braided styles. Squeaky clean hair is soft and slippery, making it harder to control. The natural oils in your second-day hair give it more texture, making it perfect for updos, braids, and holding heat styles, like curls. But beware — you don’t want your hair to be too dirty, or looking greasy or flat. If you’ve gone too far, get the dry shampoo! Second, or even third day hair that looks lived in, but not dirty, is your sweet spot for styling.

You don’t really need heat protectant

Think about it this way — when you go outside in the summer, you wear sunscreen to protect your skin. Heat protectant is like sunscreen, but for your hair! Without it, you can get split ends quicker, and end up with frizzy, fried hair. You’re using heat to style your hair with high temperatures — the same temperatures you’d use to cook your food! Protect your hair and maintain its health, before it gets damaged.

Purple shampoo can turn your hair purple

This is actually true! Purple shampoo is not an everyday use shampoo — you should only be using it when you notice your blonde colour becoming brassy or warm. If you use purple shampoo too often, not only can it turn your blonde purple, if all your hair isn’t blonde, it could start making your natural colour look yellow or orange! Be sure to use purple shampoo in moderation, and don’t let it sit for more than two or three minutes. Not only will this save your colour, it will make your product last longer!
