Colour Services: What’s the difference?

You’re thinking about colouring your hair, and you’ve found some great inspo pics, but how are you going to describe to your stylist what you want? Balayage, highlights, full colour — what does it all mean? If this sounds like you, don’t fret! Here are some explanations for the most common colouring services:

Balayage

Balayage (BAH-lee-ahge) is a French word meaning “sweeping”, just as your stylist “sweeps” colour onto your hair. For a balayage, the colour starts a couple inches away from your root, allowing for a natural blend between your roots and the highlight that gives you a natural, sunkissed look.

Full Highlights

Highlights are similar to a balayage, however, the difference lies in how the colour is applied. This service will also give your hair beautiful depth and dimension, however, the colour begins right at the root, and is applied all over the hair, instead of a couple inches away.

Partial Highlight

A partial highlight is a simplified form of full highlights. These are applied the same way, beginning at the root, but instead are only applied around your face, the crown, and the sides of your head. The main difference here is this colour doesn’t include the back of your head.

Full Colour

A full colour is just what it sounds like — one solid colour all over your hair! If you’re looking to lighten all of your hair, we would then do an enlightener full colour service, but this service requires a consultation.

New Growth

A new growth is just like a root touch-up! We’ll match the colour you currently have, and cover any regrowth from your roots to match. We can also do an enlightener new growth, which is essentially a root touch up for solid-colour blondes. Just like with a full colour service, we’ll lighten your roots to match the rest of your hair.

Hopefully this cleared up some difference between colour services! If you still aren’t sure, just bring in your inspiration photos and we’ll figure it out together. You’re also always welcome to book a complimentary consultation with our stylists before an appointment, so we can go over your goals and develop a plan to help you achieve them!
